Mr Bathandwa Zuzo, a 48-year-old male, from Gugulethu was successfully discharged from Melomed Gatesville Hospital after 3 weeks of hospitalisation recovering from the COVID-19 virus.
A cheering crowd of staff members lined the hospital\\u2019s hallways, as Mr Zuzo said his goodbyes. He was met at the entrance of the hospital by his family members and a special welcome by Minister of Health, Nomafrench Mbombo as she wished him well onto the next stage of his recovery.<\\\/p>
\\u201cThis battle against COVID-19 has been filled with challenging moments. Today\\u2019s successful discharge of my husband is a high point for all of us and we thank the medical team at Melomed Gatesville Hospital for the best healthcare provided\\u201d said Mrs Zuzo.
Mr Zuzo, is a father of 5 children and works at the City of Cape Town as a driver for the Sanitation Division. He had a two-week history of body pain, shortness of breath and high fever. He then represented himself to the Melomed Gatesville Emergency Unit on the 26 April 2020 and was immediately admitted and treated.
Dr Zaraina Solomons, a Specialist Physician at Melomed Gatesville Hospital was the primary treating doctor to Mr Zuzo. She says Mr Zuzo case was a challenging one for her and the dedicated staff who managed his care. By the 9th of May the patient showed improvement and was then weaned off the ventilator and continued on supplementary oxygen. He remained in ICU with round-the-clock monitoring.
\\u201cFor Covid-19 positive patients who respond successfully to intensive care treatment and are able to be discharged from hospital, the road to recovery can still be a lengthy one, but we are extremely overjoyed by the successful outcome. I thank my fellow colleagues and the exceptional nursing team who was instrumental in his recovery \\u2013 this was truly a team effort. Through the grace of the Almighty and the commitment of the medical staff, we look forward too many more successful patient outcomes and recoveries during this Covid-19 pandemic\\u201d she says.
Mr Henry Hendricks, Hospital Manager at Melomed Gatesville Hospital says \\u201cwe have been preparing the facility since the beginning of February to ensure we are ready to manage this pandemic.
